Catalogue Note
Victor Gilbert was a talented French genre painter. His favourite motifs were the parks and markets of Paris as well as the capitals more intimate elegant interiors.
His painting styles encompassed both in the naturalist manner of the late nineteenth century and the vibrant technique of plein-air light and brushwork which emerged in his paintings of the early twentieth century.
Gilbert studied with Adam and Busson. He exhibited widely and successfully in France. His paintings were regularly accepted to the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français and he continued to exhibit there even after the establishment of the Société Nationale in 1891. He was honoured with a gold medal in 1889 and the Bonnat Prize in 1926. His reputation was confirmed by his nomination to the Legion d'Honneur in 1897.
