Catalogue Note
The Middleton Hunt, held at Birdsall on the Yorkshire wolds, began with Sir Thomas Gascoigne who established the country between 1764 and 1773. The Duke of Hamilton took over in that year for two seasons. From 1804 until 1832, the Sykeses of Sledmere had Gascoigne's old boundaries re-established. The Middleton dynasty began with the two-season Mastership (1832-53) of the 6th Baron Willoughby.
