Catalogue Note
The present work may illustrate a flight of the photographer, writer, and pioneer balloonist, Nadar, (the pseudonym of Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, 1820-1910) who was a close personal friend of Doré. They worked together on Le Journal pour Rire in the late 1840s. In 1863 Nadar founded L'Aéronaute, the first journal of aviation. Doré contributed the journal's title image.
