Catalogue Note
Between 1894 and 1895 Detaille completed illustrations for his Les Cavaliers de Napoléon. The central European landscape pictured in one such work, Chevau-légers lanciers, 5e régiment (1813), is similar to that of the present composition. At the end of 1895 Detaille began a new series of paintings intended for an illustrated book entitled Napoléon en campagne and the present work corresponds with the subject and style of this series.
