Catalogue Note

Modelled in the round, in order to allow the viewer to appreciate the group from all angles, the present model was first conceived by the master in 1843 with a first recorded cast in 1845. Poletti & Richarme's account of the artist lifetime casts details no greater than fifteen examples, either in collaboration with E. Martin which lasted from 1845 to 1857, or by his own atelier from 1857 until the artist's death.
