Catalogue Note

This fine bronze represents a Bantu tribesman absorbed in his entrancing drug, hands and feet rough from a life of labour. The ability to capture such character is what earned Anton van Wouw titles as 'Grand old man of South African art' and 'Sculptor of national life.'

Born a Dutchman, Van Wouw did not move to South Africa until adulthood. A keen interest in his new surroundings and sympathy for the African people enabled him to represent the essential spirit of the country.
