From a first hand inspection there is a los over the lower left hand corner. The lower right hand corner (cm 5 x 10 circa) it has been reapplied; the same it was done over other sections: one middle lower edge (cm 3 x 3 circa) another along the right edge below the top corner (cm 5 x 8 circa irregular shape). There is a reinforcement on the reverse of the top left hand corner. The ultra violet light reveals strong fluorescent varnish dishomogeneously spread oevr the surface. It is suggested a careful cleansing.

Noto soprattutto per le sue marine, Pompeo Mariani si lasciò affascinare anche dalla vita mondana e dalle sue protagoniste femminili. Maternità risulta essere, però, un lavoro particolarmente intimo nella produzione dell'artista, il quale vi rappresenta emozioni diverse: affetto, ammirazione, gioia. L'inquadratura ravvicinata e l'atmosfera rarefatta suggeriscono un decisa vicinanza alla serie di opere dedicate ai "teatri milanesi": le due donne sulla sinistra assumono la stessa posizione di quelle centrali in Sussurro di guerra e di quelle raffigurate in Concerto, entrambi lavori eseguiti nel 1914.

Emozioni più intime sono riservate alla coppia madre e figlio, molto vicine al clima di "famigliarità" creato da Mariani in Ritratto di Pompeo Lomazzi a un anno con la nonna Nana del 1915.

I diversi stati d'animo di Maternità vengono abilmente amalgamati dal pittore tramite i toni caldi dei rossi e bruni e l'uso di una pennellata ancora tipicamente scapigliata.
