Condition

STRUCTURE This picture is relined an in good condition with fine detail and rich colouring. There are no signs of craquelure. There is a diagonal line of lifting paint behind the horse on the right (visible in the catalogue illustration) and a very small area behind the hooves of the horse on the extreme right - we would recommend localised treatment by a conservator in these areas. The picture may benefit from a light clean. UNDER ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT There are areas of retouching in the sky, particularly to the cloud on the far left. There are small areas of retouching to the white horse and very minor retouchings to the other three horses at the smithy. There is an area of retouching to the shoulder of the black horse and flecked retouchings to its hind-quarters and flecked retouchings to the hounds. There are also retouchings to the edges of the canvas where the paint surface has been rubbed by the rebate of the frame. The retouchings are not excessive. The varnish is opaque under ultraviolet light. FRAME This picture is contained in a simple gilt frame.
