Catalogue Note
The present view depicts the ruins of the Norman castle at Richmond in North Yorkshire, looking from the river Swale where a barge has been moored on the banks. The town of Richmond was founded in 1071 by the Norman, Alan Rufus, on lands granted to him by William the Conqueror. The construction of Richmond Castle was completed in 1086, consisted of a keep with walls encompassing the area now known as the Market Place.
