A PAIR OF GEORGE II CARVED GILT WOOD GIRANDOLES circa 1755

of asymmetrical form, each with a shaped mirror plate enclosed at one side with a gothic architectural pillar and a leafy tree, the other side with conjoined foliate ornamented conjoined C-scrolls with ruffled edges, the molded crest of curved form with foliate and icicle ornament, the pierced apron similarly formed and with sprays of leaves and two leaf ornamented scrolling candle branches with metal leaf candle holders.  Re-gilt.

In restored condition and regilded now with some cracks to the frame and some small losses overall to the extremities of the carving and with some rubbing to the gilding and losses to the gesso. The mirror plates old with some imperfections but probably not original. The metal sconces probably replaced.

The design of these small girandoles or sconces fully displays the full idiom of the rococo, with their gothic columns, rustic branches, icicles and lavish acanthus scrolls. They are related to a number of designs from various pattern books published in the 1750s, including Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director, 1754, Thomas Johnson, Twelve Girandoles, 1755, Collection of Designs, 1758, and One Hundred and Fifty New Designs, 1761, and A Society of Upholsterers' Genteel Household Furniture in the Present Taste, circa 1765.
