Catalogue Note

The inscription in Swedish on the reverse reads: 'To Sofia Aspegren, by Anselm Schultzberg. View at Lyckås by Lake Wettern (between Grenna and Jönköping, Sweden). The first snow in October 1887 (Upon his Royal Route King Carl IX (1550-1611) visited Count Magnus Brahe at Lyckås and it was also here that Crown Prince Gustavus Adolphus met and fell in love with Magnus Brahe's daughter Ebba).'

According to Schultzberg's biographer, Otto G. Carlslund, Första snön I oktober 1887 was painted at the height of Schultzberg's powers as a landscape painter, between 1884 and 1891. During the artist's stay in Lyckås, in the province of Småland, he also painted his masterly Ekbacke höststömning, which generated much applause from the French press during its exhibition in Paris in 1889.
