Catalogue Note

A keen observer of various areas of Sjælland, the Danish island on which he lived for most of his life, Ring ( Olsen) created timeless images of Ring (the town after which he renamed himself), Karrebaeksminde, Frederiksvaerk, Baldersbrønde and Sankt Jørgensbjerg. It is likely that the artist painted the present work in Sankt Jørgensbjerg, where he resided for the last twenty years of his life.

A natural affinity for winter scenes and an infusion of colour and local Nordic interest is injected into a scene that speaks of the influence of the artists Bastien-Lepage and Millet. Ring revisited the subject of roads, through many of the small towns in Sjælland, throughout his career. The melancholy beauty of these paths, stretching endlessly into the still horizon, is described in the present work and in Summer Fields (lot 280).
