Catalogue Note

In Vasko's photographic series Defining Darkness, the artist captures four themes examining the concept of control of a dark city space. Each theme explores a disparate character of darkness in a non-literal sense, from the chaos of artificial light in a bustling metropolis to the intimate dimness of a private bedroom.

Often using scale models to pervert the observer's understanding of reality, Vasko's work takes advantage of the concept of photography as a strict replication of reality and manipulates the vision of the viewer. By removing all recognisable visual elements from the cityscapes of her photographs and all objects that would define space, the artist brings tension and uncertainty into a purportedly predictable and visually reliable medium.
