Catalogue Note

Ragnar Sandberg was born in Bohuslän on the north west coast of Sweden. As a young man he loved literature and seriously considered becoming an author. Enrolling at the Valand Academy in 1920, in 1926 he travelled to France, and in 1927 had his first group exhibition with other Valand students. In 1947 he moved to Stockholm where he became professor of drawing and later of painting at the Konstakademien – the Academy of Art. He was always happiest on the wild coast and islands of western Sweden, where he would spend his summers.
