Catalogue Note

The Koster Islands are two islands west of Strömstad, off Sweden's west coast, and were the inspiration for many of Schiöler's paintings.

Gunnar Hjortens was Inge Schiöler's exclusive dealer from 1956. He ran a gallery in Gothenburg called God Konst (Good Art). Visiting Koster for the first time in 1956, he was struck by Schiöler's work and went on to organise annual exhibitions for the artist and kept an inventory of the paintings (which he numbered in green on the reverse) as he went along.
