Catalogue Note

Middle English religious or literary manscripts in private hands are rare. The pastedowns here comprise four substantial bifolia from a Middle English prose sermon on the Ten Commandments, with some incipits in Latin, written in the mid-fifteenth century in a textura hand, 26 lines in a single column. The text has quotations on the commandments from SS Augustine (here in ME form "seynt austyn"), Isidore ("ysodre") and Paul ("poule"), and is apparently similar to the texts in Salisbury Cathedral Library MS 103, ff. 190-200, which is itself a large and compendious sermon collection, probably much like the volume these leaves originally came from.
