Catalogue Note
Trithemius's Polygraphiae libri sex, first published in 1518, was the earliest book on ciphers and cryptography. Gabriel de Collange's French translation was first printed by Kerver at Paris in 1561. The present edition is a reissue of Kerver's 1625 edition, with a printed slip pasted over the original imprint at the foot of the title-page. The 1625 edition is in turn the third issue of a plagiarized version of Collange's text by Dominicus van Hottinga which was first published at Emden in 1620 in small quarto format with crudely cut volvelles.
