Primoz Trubar is considered the father of the Slovene language as he was responsible for the first appearances in print of works in that language, including the New Testament and the Psalms. His Catechism (for which see Macclesfield Bibles, lot 2314) and his Abecedarium were originally published in 1550 in Tübingen.

Trubar was greatly influenced by Pier Paolo Vergerio, bishop of Capodistria and also a convert from Catholicism to Protestantism, and the two collaborated on Trubar's translation of the New Testament. With the financial help of baron Hans Ungnad von Sonneck, they set up a press in Urach, near Tübingen, for the printing of their Slovenian works. Between 1561 and 1564, 37 religious works were produced by their press.

We have been unable to trace another copy of L'exercice pueril. There was a later edition published in 1729.
