Catalogue Note
first edition of Stjernhjelm's polemic against Cluver's Germania antiqua of 1616 (lots 4403 & 4404), "denouncing this Prussian who had been 'carried away by a disordered love for his fatherland', asking sarcastically 'what has blinded you here, my dear Cluverius?' and concluding that the Scandinavian origins of the Goths were 'clearer than the sun at mid-day' " (J. Considine, Dictionaries in early modern Europe, 2008, p.236). Cluver's crime was to have placed the origins of the Goths firmly in Prussia, not Scandinavia.
