first edition. The statesman Cardinal Gonzalez de Mendoza (1428-1495) played a prominent part in the conquest of Granada by Ferdinand and Isabella. He became archbishop of Toledo in 1482; on his deathbed he recommended the appointment of Francisco Ximenez de Cisneros as his successor (for whom see lot 4713).
