Catalogue Note
dedication copy. This fourth edition, described in the dedication by Des Maizeaux as 'plus ample et plus exacte que toutes celles qui ont paru jusqu'à présent', was dedicated to the first Earl. The soldier, essayist and literary critic Saint-Évremond lived the last 42 years of his life in exile in England and is buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. He never authorised the publication during his lifetime, but gave Des Maizeaux the authority to publish them after his death.
