Catalogue Note

The earliest catalogue of Leiden University Library was published by Petrus Bertius in 1595, "the first separately published general catalogue of an institutional library" (Taylor p.45). Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655), the author of the prefatory speech, was appointed in 1607 the fourth librarian of Leiden University Library, having held the chairs of poetics and Greek there. See the two next lots for later catalogues of the same library.

Bound in this copy is a broadsheet lecture list for Leiden University dated 1613; the lectures include: Willebrord Snell on geometry and mechanics, Petrus Cunæus on Suetonius, Joannes Meursius on Homer's Iliad, Daniel Heinsius on Seneca and Thomas Erpenius on Arabic grammar and proverbs.
