Catalogue Note

first editions. The thirteenth-century Old Norse saga of Hervor was the subject of a PhD thesis by C.J.R. Tolkien, published in 1960 as The Saga of King Heidrek the Wise, and was an important source for his father J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth. The editor Olof Verelius was a noted scholar of sagas. The second work in the volume is his book on ancient runes, in which he provides Swedish transliterations and Latin and Swedish translations of early runic inscriptions (see lot 4826 for another early work on runes).
