Catalogue Note
One of the earliest books on transalpine archaeology to deal with a single excavation. The origin of Guenebauld's fascination with the history and customs of druidism and other pagan religious systems stemmed from the discovery in 1598 at his vineyard at Poussat of a coffin with a Greek inscription eulogising Chyndonax, a priest of Mithras whom Guenebauld, a physician, assumed to be a druid. The find and subsequent research provoked a brief period of intense interest in druidism in Burgundy. The coffin was later owned by Cardinal Richelieu and, according to popular legend, was eventually used as a trough at Versailles.
