Catalogue Note
first edition of volume three. Descartes's letters in French are principally addressed to Queen Christina of Sweden, Elisabeth of Bohemia, Princess Palatine (1618-1680), Pierre Chanut (1601-1662), French ambassador to Sweden and brother-in-law of Clerselier, and Marin Mersenne (1588-1648). They were edited and published posthumously by Descartes's disciple Claude Clerselier (1614-1684). The first and second volumes of this complete edition are reprints (with some pagination errors corrected) of the first editions of 1657 and 1659. The edition was divided between Henry Le Gras and Charles Angot.
