Catalogue Note
This Wörter-Büchlein contains some 1223 entries in German, Swedish, Polish and Latvian displayed in parallel columns and arranged semantically ("About the sky and the world", "About a chemist's shop", and so on). The structure of the present work is almost identical to a dictionary of 1688, published by the same printing house. The most notable difference is that the Latin in the earlier book has here been replaced by Swedish. However, the other vocabulary lists have been revised, the Latvian significantly so. These Latvian revisions, as well as some corrections to the German and Polish, are almost certainly by Depkin. However, the Swedish content is not. Its source seems to be Johannes Wolimhaus' Enchiridion dictionarii from 1652. It is possible that Swedish usurped Latin because of the increased Swedish military presence in Riga caused by the outbreak of the Great Northern War, which certainly caused Nöller problems.
Nöller printed in Riga from 1683/4 until his death in the spring of 1712. For more information about Nöller and printing in Riga, see Macclesfield Theology, lots 2753, 2785 and 2787 and Macclesfield Bibles, lot 2422.
There is a tiny difference between the Macclesfield copy and that at the University Library in Uppsala, the latter having the penultimate leaf signed "H".
