Catalogue Note

first edition. Jean Boucher was a priest from Saint-Benoît and a leading member of the Catholic Ligue. The present work, written under the pseudonym of François de Vérone, is a defence of the student Jean Chastel who, in 1593, made an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate the Calvinist king Henri IV shortly before the king's conversion to the Catholic faith. On 14 May 1610 Henri was assassinated by a fanatical Catholic, François Ravaillac, at which point the present work was reprinted.
