Catalogue Note

Bayle's great, and controversial, dictionary, compiled in only four years, is a monument to scepticism. First published in two volumes in 1697, its exposure of then current religious ideas and philosophy led to virulent criticism by the French authorities and its banning in his native France. The Protestants objected to its scepticism and the Catholics placed it on the Index. This second edition, rarely offered for sale, was expanded by nearly half its original length, but, despite Bayle's promises to the contrary, did not contain many changes to the original edition.
