Catalogue Note

Cesare Baronio entered the Congregation of the Oratory in 1557 and succeeded St Philip Neri as the superior of the order in 1593. He was made a cardinal by Pope Clement VIII in 1596 and then librarian of the Vatican. His monumental Annales, first published between 1588 and 1607, were written at the request of Philip Neri as a response to the anti-Catholic 'Magdeburg Centuries' (Ecclesiastica historica... per aliquot... viros in urbe Magdeburgica) which had been published at Basel between 1559 and 1574.
