Catalogue Note

These six elegantly produced works, from three important Parisian printing houses of the first half of the sixteenth century, include examples of educational and philosophical writing, as well as poetic encomia. The most significant of the works is the last bound, first published in this form in an unauthorised edition by Froben in Basel the previous year. Erasmus composed this text book whilst acting as a pedagogue in Paris at the turn of the century. It is constructed as a series of formulae for polite conversation and elegant and idiomatic Latin usage. This slim work was revisited by Erasmus from 1522, and over the course of more than a decade was transformed into an expansive series of dialogues displaying the influence of Lucian, Plato and Cicero, and in the process became a major piece of Renaissance Neo-Latin literature.
