Catalogue Note
François de La Nouë (1531-1591) was a celebrated military captain for Protestant causes who lost an arm at the siege of Fontenay. He was made a replacement in iron with which he could hold the reins of his horse, leading to his nickname among the soldiery of Bras-de-fer.
