Catalogue Note
This copiously and charmingly illustrated edition of Aesop, Avienus and the Batrachomyomachia presents the first and last in parallel Greek and Latin text. Edited by the Leiden Greek professor Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655), it first appeared in 1626 for employment in Dutch schools.
The two short collections of regulations drawn up by the Senate of Riga governing the teaching in schools there, the latter in parallel Latin and German, are dated 14 October 1681; the only earlier edition in public collections appears to be one of 1696 in the Royal Library in Copenhagen.
