Catalogue Note
This very attractive study, clearly made from a posed model, was used by Giaquinto for the figure of a captive in the important altarpiece, The Founding of the Trinitarian Order, which he painted for SS Trinità degli Spagnoli, Rome, circa 1749. The Trinitarians were dedicated to ransoming captives and slaves and in the altarpiece an angel stands next to this figure, holding his chains. A sketch of a different compositon with the same subject, possibly an early idea for the altarpiece, was exhibited at Colnaghi's in 1983 (cat. no. 36, reproduced) and a red chalk drawing related to the figure of Christ in the finished painting was recently sold in London (Christie's, 7 July 1998, lot 158).
