Catalogue Note
The Florentine chronicler of the lives of the artists, Filippo Baldinucci (1624-1696), described Giovanni Balducci as the first and principal pupil of Giovanni Battista Naldini (c.1537-1591), who clearly exerted a profound influence on the development of the younger artist. In this double-sided sheet, the figure on the verso, and the profile of the young boy in particular, are very characteristic of Balducci's individual and accomplished style. Both recto and verso could be studies dal modello, the recto perhaps intended for use in a composition depicting Christ being nailed to the Cross.
