Catalogue Note

In their biographical entry on Allegrini, John Gere and Philip Pouncey note that the artist's red chalk drawings show parallels with the style of Cavaliere d'Arpino, as well as those of Pietro da Cortona, and even Guercino.1  The validity of their observations is evident in the present study.  The latter can be compared stylistically with the compositional study by the artist, Pegasus mastered by Perseus with Jupiter and Diana, formerly at Holkham Hall, although the Holkham sheet is executed in a different medium.2
