Catalogue Note
In her exhibition catalogue, Flavia Ormond suggested that this is a work of around 1633 and that it might be connected with Tavarone's paintings in S. Andrea, Genoa. Another drawing for that project, also octagonal in shape, shows the Saint turning away from the viewer and being led towards his distant cross (identified by its traditional X-shaped form).1 At that time, Tavarone was working on other Genoese commissions, some of which also included octagonal compositions. Mrs Ormond acknowledged the help of Mary Newcome Schleier in the preparation of her entry.
