Catalogue Note
Dr. Augusto Luis Viera Soares (1873-1954) was born in Braga, Portugal. He graduated in Law at the University of Coimbra and became assistant to the Attorney-General. He was Portuguese Foreign Minister in Dr Afonso da Costa's Democratic Government, from 1915 to 1917. He was the second Portuguese delagate at the Peace Conference in Versailles in 1919, the first being Dr Afonso da Costa (see lot 146). It was in the capacity of Peace Conference delegate that Orpen painted this study of him, but he was not included in the final line up in any of Orpen's Peace Conference works.
