Condition

The board is sound. There are some very fine and minor lines of horizontal surface craquelure in left and right sky along the grain of the board otherwise in excellent original condition. Under ultraviolet light, there appear to be no signs of retouching. Held in its original black veneer frame under glass; unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

The present work is almost certainly a scene on Achill Island with the mountain of Slievemore in the background. Dated 1938 - 1940 on stylistic grounds, West of Ireland Cottages was probably composed from sketches executed perhaps years earlier and is numbered 1225 in S. B. Kennedy's ongoing catalogue of Paul Henry's oeuvre.
