Catalogue Note

The sheer three-dimensionality of the expanse of sea extending before the viewer, in which broad brushstrokes blend into the crests of waves and heavy white impasto creates a tactile, pristine foam, is striking in the present work. Tetsis is well-known for the richness of his palette, the combined painterly and plastic quality of his works, the rhythmic layout and the starkness of his light, and this large-scale oil exhibits these strengths. The vivid contrast between the flat, scribbled yellow of the cliff face, the sticky whites and the cold, deep blue of the water points to Tetsis' skills as a colourist, as well as his interest in landscapes which became more prominent in his work after 1960.
