Catalogue Note

In the present work a little girl stands pouting and crying amongst a bevy of chickens, who frantically consume their fresh feed.  Though this plump, sweet-faced and angelic little girl is not overtly attempting to take on adult characteristics as in other works by Jakobides, the humour inherent in the depiction of a displaced, mewling child in her immaculately pretty pinafore and best hat, immobile in an overgrown farmyard, is entertaining and gently bittersweet.

The flurry of feathery brushstrokes that describe the farmyard incident initially belie Jakobides' staunch realism, and imbue the outdoor genre scene with a delicate sentimentality that has emotional resonance. The sensitivity of the artist is behind each brushstroke, as well as his acknowledgment of the importance of the seemingly mundane moments in life, namely in the life of a child; Jakobides' works featuring children are simply a celebration of childhood and a sympathetic, humorous though unflinching analysis of pretenses and idiosyncrasies.
