Catalogue Note
By the mid-Nineteenth Century, Greek costumes, embroideries and textiles had become popular subjects with European artists. Edward F. Green exhibited a series of works depicting Greek subjects at the British Institution and the Society of British Artists in 1834 and 1835, which would have captured the attention of a public fascinated and moved by the drama of the Greek struggle for independence and the proclamation of a new Greek kingdom in 1833.
