Description

  • A PAIR OF CHINESE WUCAI 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' BOWLS, MARK AND PERIOD OF DAOGUANG
  • each 15cm diameter
each of deep rounded form, the sides rising to an everted rim, the exterior painted with two dragons in pursuit of 'flaming pearls' alternating with two plunging phoenix, among scattered flowering stems, all below a border of the bajixiang(eight Buddhist emblems) interespersed with ruyi heads, the interior with a central iron-red dragon medallion

Condition

One with several small chips extending 1cm on underside of everted rim. A small raised 'pimple' on interior below everted rim. The other good condition. Not quite matched pair.

Catalogue Note

A Daoguang bowl of this pattern from the collection of Simon Kwan was included in the exhibition Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong 1983, cat no 44; another from the Weishaupt collection was included in the exhibition From the Dragon's Treasure, Museum fur Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt am Main, 1987, cat no 79.
