Catalogue Note

This painting is very likely the pendant to a work by Hoet in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, depicting The Banquet of Cleopatra. The Getty picture, which has the same dimensions, portrays a similar multifigured composition in an elaborate architectural interior and depicts the figure of Cleopatra in the same deep blue drapery embroidered with gold. The Getty painting, which is unsigned, also has a German provenance and was acquired by the Getty from the Munich dealer Julius Böhler in 1969.
