Catalogue Note
A plate from this service, one of two services made simultaneously for Sir Charles Peers (1703-81) of Chislehampton Lodge, Oxfordshire, is illustrated by Howard 1974, p. 249, no. E10, and further discussed on p. 80. Others are illustrated by Howard and Ayers, Vol. II, p. 409, no. 408; and by Tudor-Craig, p. 120, who also illustrates a plate from the other service (blue and white) and the invoice for the present service dated "Canton the 10th Dec: 1731." A plate from each service, along with the invoice is illustrated by Hyde, p. 79, pl. XIII, nos. 34, 35 and 36. Godden, p. 196, transcribes the invoice, revealing the enormity and cost of the order, and illustrates in pl. 112 a soup plate, and in pl. 113 one of the dozen salt cellars and one of the dozen sauceboats in the original order. A plate and the invoice for this service also are illustrated by Phillips, pp. 39 and 38, figs. 25 and 24, respectively. Two soup plates, one from each of the Peers services, along with a mother-of-pearl gaming counter with the Peers crest, are illustrated by Fuchs, p. 57, no. 20; and two gaming counters and a coffee cup are illustrated by Howard 1997, p. 61, no. 58 (second from the right).
A soup plate from this service was in the collection of Leo and Doris Hodroff, sold at Christie's in New York on January 23, 2008, lot 338.
