Alexander Lowe apprenticed in London, but traveled to India in 1824 at the request of George Gordon to work for that firm in Madras. Made a partner in 1831, he left in 1842 to found Lowe & Co., on Mount Road. The firm was dissolved in 1870.
A similar salver by this firm is in the Peabody Essex Museum, illustrated in Wynyard R.T. Wilkinson, The Makers of Indian Colonial Silver, p. 117.
