Description
- height 2 3/8 in.; diameter 5 1/2 in.
- 6 cm and 13.9 cm
each painted within a roundel with a small boy observing a fashionable young lady seated before a mossy column and having her fortune told by a black-cloaked chiromancer, the rim with a border of alternating floral and berried garlands suspended from gilt discs, one at the top of the saucer with a rose bowknot, and the angular handle fully gilded.

Condition
Cup with a 1 1/4" haircrack on one side, opposite a 1 x 3/4" piece reglued into the rim, minor wear to gilding on handle and rim edge; saucer with wear to gilding on rim edge.

Catalogue Note
This decoration was taken from an engraving by Bernard Picart (1673-1733) after the painting 'La Diseuse d'Aventure' by Jean Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). The engraving and a Meissen Hausmaler cup and saucer with the same decoration are illustrated by Ducret, Vol. II, p. 167, pls. 210-212. A teacup with this decoration is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, p. 95, no. 4.42. An identical teacup and saucer are illustrated by Veiga, p. 164, pl. 135, and were in the collection of Jorge Getulio Veiga, sold at Sotheby's in London on October 31, 1989, lot 279. Another teacup and saucer were sold at Christie's in New York on January 25, 2000, lot 179.
