Description

  • height 2 5/8 in.; diameter 5 7/16 in.
  • 6.6 cm and 13.8 cm
each painted within a gilt oval or roundel with a maiden holding a white cloth over the head of a youth slumbering in a glade with a wheat field and granary beyond, the rim with a purple French ribbon looped and entwined with branches of pink roses, and the ridged loop handle with a gilt scroll device.  Some wear to the gilt rim edges

Condition

Both with wear to gilding on rim edge, cup with 1 inch haircrack to side of handle (interior speckled on that side).

Catalogue Note

A saucer decorated with this subject but in an extended landscape and within a different border is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, p. 159, no. 7.48.  A pair of saucers identically decorated to the present cup and saucer was sold at Christie's in New York on January 24, 1997, lot 102.
