Description
- diameter 10 1/2 in.
- 26.7 cm
painted en grisaille within a gilt roundel on the front with a young man entering a bedroom and observing a women and a boy asleep on a canopied bed near a seated cat and a candle on the floor, and on the reverse with a women presenting a maiden wearing a décolleté dress to a seated gentleman whose servant holds a box of coins, the sides and interior with gilt-heightened iron-red and brown floral sprays, and the interior rim with a gilt spearhead border. Repaired.

In their discussion of this bowl, Hervouët and Bruneau (see Literature above) note the exceptional detail of the shadow cast by the candle-lit figure at the door, a detail from the unidentified print source, which the Chinese artist seems to have understood clearly. While the treatment of both the draperies and the interiors in the two scenes is similar, it is unclear whether the source prints were related
