Description
- diameters 2 3/4 and 4 1/2 in.
- 7.1 and 11.5 cm
painted in grisaille, brown, salmon wash and gilding with a bespectacled elderly lady teaching a young woman to string gilt beads, the interior rim of the teabowl and the lower rim of the saucer with a border of four black-ground 'scrolls' heightened with gilt lotus vines and reserved with floral panels. The saucer with a minuscule chip and another touched up.

Condition
Minor wear to gilding on saucer edge, minor spot of stacking wear, 1mm chip at 7 o'clock on outer rim edge; teabowl with Mottahedeh sticker.

An identical saucer is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, p. 131, no. 6.50. The teapot from this service is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, Vol. I, p. 276, no. 273, and was in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Rafi Y. Mottahedeh, sold in these rooms on January 30, 1985, lot 172; and another teabowl and saucer from that collection also was sold in these rooms on January 27, 1988, lot 252.
