Catalogue Note

The shape and decoration of this vase may have been taken from a Rouen faïence original, an example of which is illustrated by Chompret, et al., Répertoire de la Faience Française, Paris, 1933, Tome V, pl. 72A.  A pair of covered vases of this shape with quite similar decoration in a doucai palette, was sold at Sotheby's in London on May 6, 1986, lot 139.  A slightly taller campaniform vase with very similar gilt Bérainesque decoration on a powder-blue ground was offered for sale also at Sotheby's in London on May 16, 1995, lot 41.
